What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety can look pretty different for everyone, but here is a broad definition. Anxiety is what we feel when we are worried, scared, or tense - commonly about things that are about to happen in the future. Anxiety is a response when we perceive a threat, and it can be experienced through our thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations.

Most of us will feel anxious when faced with a stressful situation that has a big impact on our well-being and life. Remember, it is completely normal to experience occasional anxiety.

Some people can suffer from anxiety as a mental health issue. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is excessive worry about several different things like money, health, family, work, and other issues. People with GAD find it hard to control their concerns and will experience anxiety more often than not.

GAD is diagnosed when someone finds it difficult to control their worry for more days than not for at least six months, differentiating it from anxiety you feel in a stressful situation. GAD affects around 3.1% of the US population, and women are twice as likely to suffer from GAD!

Check out the common anxiety symptoms, but keep in mind anxiety looks very different for everyone:

  • Feeling nervous, irritable, or on edge
  • Feeling a sense of future danger
  • Having trouble sleeping
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Increased heart rate
  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation), sweating, or trembling
  • Feeling weak/ tired

It is common for people to experience anxiety alongside other mental health problems like depression or suicidal feelings. If you or a friend are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, we recommend seeking professional help and talking to your doctor about different treatment options.

Just Breathe

Deep breathing is your secret weapon when it comes to calming down! Breathing exercises can help you relax and feel more in control. Let’s run through a common breathing technique used for stress, anxiety, and panic attacks. It only takes a few minutes and can be done anywhere - your office, your bedroom, and even the public bathroom in a pinch!

  1. Get as comfy as you can. You can lay down on a yoga mat or bed, sit in a chair, or stand up.
  2. Take a breath through your nose deep into your belly. Some people find it helpful to count to 5 on the inhale.
  3. Breathe out slowly and gently through your mouth. Count to 5 on the exhale.
